Launcher Antennas

Anywaves develops space-qualified launcher antennas designed to ensure reliable communication and tracking during the critical ascent phase of launch missions.

Launcher antennas operate in one of the most demanding environments in the space industry, where extreme vibration, thermal stress and dynamic conditions must be managed without compromising RF performance. Our product lines are engineered to maintain stable and continuous links between the launcher and ground systems throughout ascent.

Designed, manufactured and qualified in-house, these antennas combine mechanical robustness, thermal protection and predictable RF behavior. They support telemetry, tracking and navigation functions, enabling accurate monitoring and control from lift-off to separation.

Questions
& Answers

  • What differentiates space antennas from launcher antennas?

Space antennas are designed for in-orbit operations, supporting communication, data downlink or payload functions in relatively stable conditions. Launcher antennas operate during the ascent phase, where vibration, acceleration and thermal loads are significantly higher. They are specifically engineered to maintain reliable communication and tracking under these extreme and rapidly changing conditions, from lift-off to separation.

  • What are the key features of a launcher antenna?

Launcher antennas are designed to meet the constraints of the ascent phase. They combine mechanical robustness to withstand vibration and shock, thermal resistance to handle rapid temperature changes, and stable RF performance under dynamic conditions. They are typically optimized for S-band or GNSS frequencies and designed to ensure continuous communication and tracking throughout the launch.

  • Are you able to provide test caps for launcher antennas?

Yes. We provide test caps specifically designed for our launcher antennas. They enable RF verification in controlled environments such as clean rooms or thermal chambers, without requiring full anechoic setups. This allows repeatable measurements and simplifies integration and validation phases.

  • Where are Anywaves launcher antennas manufactured?

Our launcher antennas are designed and manufactured in-house within our European facilities, using a qualified supply chain aligned with EN9100 standards. This ensures full control over quality, traceability and performance across all production stages.

  • Can I buy a single antenna or is there a minimum order? How quickly can I receive my order?

We support both single-unit orders and volume production. Engineering Models can be supplied for early validation and integration, while Flight Models are delivered with full acceptance testing. Lead times depend on product availability and configuration, and some standard products can be delivered within short timeframes.

  • Is the EIDP included? What does it contain?

Yes, the Engineering Item Data Package (EIDP) is included. It provides all necessary documentation for integration and programme traceability, including acceptance test reports, Interface Control Document (ICD), mechanical drawings, user manual and certificate of conformity.

  • How do launcher antennas maintain RF performance under high vibration?

Launcher antennas are designed with reinforced mechanical structures and validated through vibration and shock testing representative of launch conditions. The RF design and mechanical integration are closely linked to ensure that performance parameters such as gain and radiation pattern remain stable despite mechanical stress during ascent.

  • What role do launcher antennas play in mission safety?

Launcher antennas are critical to maintaining communication between the vehicle and ground systems during ascent. They enable real-time telemetry and command, which are essential for monitoring vehicle behavior and responding to anomalies. Any loss of link during this phase can directly impact mission safety and control.

  • Are launcher antennas compatible with different vehicle architectures?

Yes. Launcher antennas are designed with integration constraints in mind, including mounting location, mechanical interfaces and RF compatibility. This allows them to be adapted to different launcher configurations while maintaining consistent performance.

  • What is the impact of thermal conditions on launcher antenna performance?

During ascent, antennas are exposed to rapid temperature variations and high thermal flux. Materials, coatings and structural design are selected to maintain RF stability under these conditions. Thermal protection ensures that electrical performance is preserved and that no structural deformation affects the antenna behavior.

  • Which functions can a launcher antenna support?

Launcher antennas can support multiple RF functions, including telemetry transmission, command reception, tracking and GNSS-based navigation. Depending on the architecture, these functions may be handled by separate antennas or integrated into multi-function solutions.
